Product Details

Technical Data

A range of fast drying alcohol-based stains suitable for hand, spray or dip application and particularly suitable in the finishing systems used for wooden flooring and parquet.

The standard range consists of popular primary colours and a selection of the most widely used wood colours.

Properties
Formulated to provide excellent definition and depth of colour. This range is also suitable for tinting Morrells Precatalyst and Acid Catalyst lacquers up to a maximum of 5% by volume (AC’s should be catalysed prior to tinting).
Colour Matching

Morrells provides a bespoke colour matching service for this type of stain and all the other stains on our range.

All requests for special colours should be accompanied by a sufficient quantity of the timber to be used for the actual job plus full details of application method and finishing system to be employed.

Requests for special stains for flooring should be clearly indicated i.e. “For Flooring” or “For Flooring application”. Failure to provide this information may lead to an inappropriate stain being supplied. Morrells will not accept liability for this omission.

Typical Handling

Drying/Recoat time: 15 - 30 minutes @ 18oC.

For Flooring applications a minimum of 2 hours before applying sealers & topcoats is recommended.

Packing time: Overnight minimum dependent on conditions.

Cleaning
0170/000 or Methylated Spirits (R034) should be used for equipment thinning and cleaning.
Coverage
Approximately 40 - 60m2 per 5Lts dependent upon the size, orientation and surface quality of the item being coated.
Application Guidelines

Substrate Preparation: The substrate should be pre-sanded with 180 Grit paper prior to stain application to avoid problems such as patchy or uneven drying. Hand Staining: Use a soft, white, lint-free cloth. Avoid using coloured or printed rags as the dyes used in printing can bleed into the stain and cause discolouration. Apply the stain wet to the whole surface to avoid uneven penetration and then remove excess with a clean cloth. For larger surfaces it may be appropriate to apply the stain in sections. Always work along the grain when cleaning off.

For floors it may be appropriate to apply the stain by suitable pad type applicator in sections along the grain keeping a wet edge to allow seamless blending between sections and leaving a minimum of 2 hours to dry before applying sealers & topcoats.

Spray Application: Spray apply an even wet coat and remove excess with a soft, white, lint-free cloth. When dry spraying ensure an even coat is applied and that the gun strokes follow the grain of the timber. Dry spraying needs a certain skill level, and if undertaken incorrectly can lead to patchiness and ‘striping’. The wiping-off process can enhance the evenness of the colour and highlight the grain definition and the natural figuring of the substrate. Thinning with 50% 0170/000 –LF Thinners can assist in controlling the spray staining operation, but may change the tone or strength of shade.

Dip Application: Plunge or controlled dip can be undertaken and it is advisable to wipe excess stain off with a clean, white, lint-free cloth to achieve an even degree of staining.

Important Information
  • Always order enough product from the same batch of material to complete the job, as natural batch to batch variance can occur.
  • Morrells Stain Ranges are manufactured on different dyestuffs to unique formulations and as a consequence are not designed to be an exact replication of each other.
  • If switching from one stain type to another always undertake a colour check prior to use.
  • Variances in timber can change the appearance of a stain – always prepare a test panel/area to approve the colour/finish on the actual timber being used.
  • Product should be stored above 5oC and protected from frost.
  • Optimum application is achieved between 18oC and 22oC with good air movement and ventilation.
  • Finished products should not be subjected to environments with temperatures of < 2oC.
  • Out of scope with 2004/42/EC.
